Finished my Finnish herring 'silakka' pillow.
Totally in love with my new craft book Scandinavian Stitches made by Syko, it has the sweetest little projects.
I made this pillow as a present but after completion I really really want to make one for myself. Or keep it even.
I picked up a few new techniques making it. The first was pulling the top thread through to the back and tying off. It really does make the top look neater rather than reverse sewing back and forth etc. And the second technique is using an embroidery thread to top stitch around applique. I didn't realise how much it would affect the look of the appliqued fish.
This pillow has been entered into Stitched in Color's Bloggers Pillow Party.
Wish me luck.
How interesting, we have the word 'salacca' used to identify salted dried fish. It probably comes from silakka, every day I can learn something new. By the way your fish are superb.
ReplyDeleteI found this through the blogger pillow party. So cute!

That's a project that caught my eye in the book as well. Yours turned out great!
ReplyDeletethis is cute, it's a fab book isn't it? When you say you used embroidery thread around the fish, do you mean in your machine? machine embroidery thread or hand? (sorry if it's a daft question, I'm new to sewing!)
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping by. A happy new year to you. Love your cushions!

ReplyDeleteYou are right about the top stitch with the embroidery thread. It just makes the fishies 'pop' (if fish can do such a thing). Great pillow.
